We clarify a number of aspects of spherically symmetric solutions of non-minimally coupled scalar tensor theories using the 1+1+2 covariant approach. Particular attention is dedicated to the existence of a Schwarzschild solution and the applicability of Birkhoff's theorem in this case. We also present some new exact solutions.
